We visit Sydney’s newest museum, designed by Johnson Pilton Walker and opened in November 2020.
The long-held dream of uniting the university’s three major collections — pieced together over more than 150 years — was realised thanks to the foresight and generosity of Dr Chau Chak Wing, the Chinese-Australian businessman and philanthropist, The Ian Potter Foundation, Nelson Meers Foundation and Penelope Seidler, AM.
The building now houses the Nicholson Collection (antiquities and archaeology), the Macleay Collection (natural and cultural history), and the university’s art collection — tripling the exhibition space previously available.
Of the items on display, 70% have not been seen publicly for over 20 years. From ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt, to the art of First Nations people, and the works of leading contemporary artists, the museum is open to all as a centre of cultural and artistic excellence.
Given the size of the museum and collections we have organised for attendees to have a guided tour. The tour will take about one hour and people are advised to be at the museum before 1.30pm as the tour will start (sharp) at that time.
