The auctioneer provided champagne to help persuade customers to buy land in the new village named Norwood in 1854.

But they didn’t need persuasion at all as the land on the hill just south of Petersham Railway station was well-connected and healthy.

The hill is the highest in the inner-west so it was automatically considered very healthy and desirable in the days prior to 1890 when the sewage pipes were connected.

Mark Matheson will show newly-retrieved images based on material from a complete reading of Petersham Council documents and tells of those families who were connected by marriage and finance (and murder).
