125 years ago the suburb known as Haberfield was begun by a Summer Hill real estate agent called Richard Stanton. The suburb would come to embody the ideas of a ‘Garden City’.
This idea was formulated by a British urban planner, Ebenezer Howard. The horror of 19th century urban living for most people (slums) as they left the countryside for work led to Howard formulating the idea of garden suburbs/cities. They could provide healthy living in a green environment while providing access to employment.

This tour will be looking at houses from the second subdivision and the final (5th) subdivision of Stanton’s Haberfield Estate. It will end in the grounds of two of Haberfield’s oldest buildings.
At the end of the tour a visit to a local cafe (at your own expense) is an option.
Vince Crow OAM has lived in Haberfield most of his life. He is a member of the Haberfield Association and has been its president several times. Vince was at the forefront of the campaign, starting in the 1970s, to create a Haberfield Conservation Area.
Haberfield: Distinctly Australian is one of a number of his local history publications.
