As Australians we use symbols to define ourselves. Convicts, kangaroos, bushies, the Sydney Opera House, even Vegemite.

But what do these symbols really mean, who creates them, why do they become popular and have they changed over time?
This illustrated talk looks to answer some of these questions by looking at a range of Australia’s national symbols from the formal to the popular, the commercial and the funny.
Historian Richard White has written extensively on national identity, tourism and popular culture.
Along with Melissa Harper, Richard has edited Symbols of Australia: Imagining a Nation. He is the author of the seminal 1981 book ‘Inventing Australia: Images and Identity 1688-1980.’
