Heritage Lost: Addison Theatre

Located in the Marrickville suburb of Sydney. Operated by Acme Theatres, the Addison Theatre opened in January 1934 and was a typical suburban independent, running double bills every week.

Closed in December 1959 the Addison Theatre was demolished and a gas station occupies the site today. (Ref: Cinema Treasures)

  1. This building still exists as it’s on the corner of Addison Road and Agar Street Marrickville. It is where the bike shop is. Many years ago they used to be a hardware store and I was shown the inside where the theatre was. I was on a different website and it showed that the theatre was where the Metro petrol station – which is wrong?

Guided by the owner of the hardware store at the time we went into the building from the back . I remember it had high ceilings and you can see where the stage used to be at the front of building. This theatre used to be very majestic in its time.

    1. Hello Heend, thank you for your reply and your memory. I am sorry to say that this theatre has definitely gone. It was situated on the corner of Weymss Street and Addison Road and was opened in October 1924 as the Victory Theatre. It was built for the Szarka Brothers (William and George) who also owned the Enmore Theatre. It was bought by Fuller’s Theatres Ltd in 1931 and was closed in July 1958 when it was demolished for a petrol station. The Sands Postal Directory of 1930-32 shows that a “Palladium Skating Rink” was at the site you mention but I have been unable to find out anything about it. Perhaps this was in the building you saw.
